Booking system | Each owner chooses three weeks per year, two between April and September inclusive, and one from any other month. The list of owners rotates in pairs each year giving everyone a chance to choose their weeks first or second over a six year period. Apart from two weeks put aside over the winter for maintenance, all other weeks are available as extras, priority being given to those at the bottom of the list. In fact, there is seldom competition for the extra weeks. |
Priority for school holidays | At present, two owners have special arrangements for school holidays. The rules allow for up to two owners to have this status in any year, for a slightly higher contribution to the running costs (correct as at 2017). |

General comments by vendor
Starting at the rear. there is a fixed double bed which can be extended to king size, together with ample storage space and an en-suite pump-out toilet/shower. The bathroom contains a second pump-out toilet, vanity unit, airing cupboard, corner bath and shower. Forward from this is a kitchen with four-burner gas hob, grill and oven, fridge, microwave and plenty of storage space.
The lounge area has an L-shaped dinette which converts into a double bed, and two armchairs which each convert into a single bed. There is also a wide-screen TV with DVD player, a digital radio/CD unit and a solid fuel stove. Gas central heating can also be used to heat the whole boat. The double-glazed front doors can be opened to almost the full width which is ideal for eating in the well deck in warm weather.
The large water tank is situated at the front of the boat, and there are large storage lockers/seats in the well deck. The lockers contain the hose reel, windlasses, mooring pins, shuttering hooks, river anchor and chain. The boat is also fitted with smoke detectors, 12V charging sockets (for mobile phones etc) and mains sockets (supplied by an inverter or shore power).
The friendly group of owners took over the running of the boat after the collapse of OwnerShips in 2010. This considerably reduced our running costs and we now each have at least three weeks of holidays every year for less than £750. This covers mooring, insurance, licence, gold river rescue service (which is virtually never used), and predictable repair costs.
Decisions regarding maintenance and home mooring are made at an annual general meeting that takes place in Northampton in October each year.
The boat had a bare metal repaint in 2014 which made Steelaway look like new. It is not anticipated that this will need to be repeated for five or six years.
When using the boat, owners pay for diesel, pump-outs, gas (if a bottle runs out), and usually a valet on the day they return (approximately £40).,
