General Comments About the Boat

Launched in July 1999, Quince is a 45 foot 6/7 berth narrow boat fitted by Triton boat fitters of Eccles.

Coop members have been active in maintaining and upgrading the boat over the years to create a solid, well equipped, comfortable and reliable base for enjoyable cruising and holidays.

Quince is regularly and professionally serviced and maintained. Repairs and upgrades are carried out as soon as they are needed, or on a regular cycle. A new Beta Marine engine was installed in 2018. The hull is blacked every three years.

From the rear, there is a large open deck with engine under; a lounge/dining area with a multi fuel stove and a CD/radio/USB player; a fully equipped kitchen with four burner hob, double oven / grill, and fridge (replaced in January 2020); a shower room with cassette toilet; a cabin with two bunk beds (sleeps up to 5); and a forward open seating area. The electrics include an inverter to allow low-power 220 volt equipment to be used (e.g. a laptop / DVD player).

There is sleeping space for two by converting the dining area, and four/five in the forward cabin (which converts to bench seating in the day).

General comments by vendor

Quince is a much-loved 45-foot, 6+ berth narrowboat.

She is well equipped with a cooker, fridge, wood/ coal burning stove, shower, cassette toilet, and USB/CD/radio.

A new engine was installed in 2018 and she has been maintained to a high standard (bottom blacked winter 25/26, and re-painting planned for 26/27).

Quince is designed for maximum flexibility: the dining/sitting area at the back converts to a double bedroom, and two bench seats at the front convert to two double bunks or one king-sized bed. The galley kitchen is well equipped, and the spacious rear deck is great for al-fresco eating. The rear deck being next to the living area is particularly handy if you need to keep an eye on small children.

Quince moves around the country during the boating season – each member picks it up from where the last person moored. It’s a great way to see the waterways network. Towards the end of the season members move the boat towards an agreed winter (boatyard/ marina) mooring. In recent years that has been in Leicester with a move to Cheshire planned at the end of the 2026 season.

Most of the maintenance is done in the winter: major works by a reputable boatyard/ mechanic and minor tasks by co-op members.

Weeks are booked from 1st January (by negotiation if necessary) on a first come first served basis. In addition to the two-week allocation there are often odd weekends/ weeks which become available to book.

The Quince Narrowboat Co-operative was formed in 1997 by a group of us moving on from another narrowboat co-op. Our aim was to commission a new well-equipped boat, to be used co-operatively with a sustainable level of funding. The Co-op members hail from a wide area of the UK from Edinburgh, Cheshire and Hull, to Leicester, Bristol, Dorset and London.

The Co-op holds two meetings a year: one in March is to check that winter maintenance has been carried out, and to plan the coming season, and one in November to review the previous season and agree winter maintenance requirements. They are usually held in a pub near to Quince’s winter mooring and are a great opportunity to catch up with the other Co-op members.

Members are expected to attend at least one meeting a year - two if possible.

The spring meeting is sometimes a hybrid (on-line/ in person) meeting.

All members should help with the working of the Co-op in any way they can. This generally means attending meetings, taking on agreed tasks, and generally mucking in.

Prospective shareholders will be invited to meet members of the co-op and to view the boat. If we offer you membership and you purchase a share, you will then be trained by one of our members in how to use ‘Quince’.
